Recordings made in collaboration with Elena Villamil, documenting the sounds of the preparation Chicha.

Chicha is a fermented drink of ancestral origins made with maize that has different variations throughout Latin America. In 1948, the Colombian government banned chicha under the lobby and pressure of the banker Mario Santo Domingo and his brewing company Bavaria. As part of this campaign against chicha, the government released a racist and classist advertisement campaign which attacked citizens from rural and unprivileged areas and from indigenous descend.

In Colombia, chicha is approached as an element of resistance and identity connected with ancestral indigenous knowledge and with the contention against colonial Spanish forces and hegemonic economic practices that are detrimental for unprivileged segments of the population.
