This piece reflects on the agency of cellphones in contemporary field recording. Carrying a recorder or a microphone implies a sense of purpose in the way in which we engage with the actant environment. The cellphone is expected to go with us everywhere, we don't carry it to record, we are not expected to and yet, we can. This creates a new approach to recording one that favours immediacy and spontaneity. One that values being there and not so much the possibility to preserve and dissect the heard moment. This reflection leads to rethink materiality and engagement in field-recording based arts.
